Which Base Material Do You Need?

Not sure which product is right for your project? Here's a quick guide.

Driveways and parking areas: Class 6 road base is the standard choice for driveway sub-base preparation across Northern Colorado. It compacts tightly, handles vehicle weight, and holds up through freeze-thaw cycles. The red road base works the same way, with a more natural appearance when the edges are visible. Recycled asphalt is a budget-friendly alternative that self-binds over time and works well for unpaved driveways and rural roads.

Foundations, retaining walls, and hardscape: Structural fill is used when you need to raise grade, fill an excavation, or provide a stable base beneath concrete, pavers, or block walls. It is engineered to support a load without settling. Do not substitute decorative rock or topsoil in these applications.

Drainage and fill applications: Recycled concrete is a versatile option for drainage beds, French drains, and general fill. It is permeable, affordable, and reliable as a road base substitute in low-load applications.

How Much Base Material Do You Need?

Estimating your material quantity before you order saves time and avoids costly short loads. Here are some general guidelines:

Driveways: Plan for 4 to 6 inches of compacted road base material beneath your finished surface. A 4-inch base across a standard two-car driveway (approximately 20 x 40 feet) requires roughly 10 to 12 tons of Class 6 or red road base.

Pathways and walkways: A 3- to 4-inch base is typically sufficient for pedestrian foot traffic. Lighter loads require less depth, but compaction is still important for long-term stability.

Structural fill: Depth requirements vary significantly based on the application. Foundation fill and retaining wall backfill should be engineered to spec. If you are unsure, consult your contractor or give us a call.

As a general rule of thumb, one ton of compacted road base material covers approximately 80 to 100 square feet at a depth of 2 inches. Doubling the depth cuts that coverage roughly in half.

Crystal Landscape Supplies sells base materials by the ton. Our team can help you calculate the quantity you need based on your project dimensions — just bring your measurements when you visit or call ahead.
